In addition to Panama Joe's suggestion, there was also a 1991 made-for-TV film called ';The Haunted,'; based on an allegedly true story from the archives of ';Demonologists'; Ed and Lorraine Warren. The recent film ';The Haunting in Connecticut'; was also based on one of their cases.

This was also a very low-key film with few special effects, and could very well be the one you were thinking of.Any1 remember a film from 70's (i think) called 'haunted' or 'the haunted'? based on a true story?
';The Haunting'; (1963) stars Julie Harris and Claire Bloom. My friend has it and a 1999 remake starring Lily Taylor and Catherine Zeta-Jones. They are based upon a book ';The Haunting of Hull House'; by Shirley Jackson. Both are good, but I prefer the original that is the scariest movie I have seen. Many horror movies are just comical or disgusting with outlandish effects, but this one has minimal effects and no corny ghosts. It leaves much to our imagination, and that is why it is scarier than movies with absurd ghosts.
I'm not sure about your movie but if you want to scare your self read the true story called, Graves End it was the scariest thing I've ever read. I slept with the lights on for a month.
The Haunting (1963) is often cited as one of the scariest movies ever. No ghosts or monsters appear on the screen, though. The horror is in your own imagination!
